Calliper brakes are mostly found on road bikes and many cyclocross and hybrid bikes. They use a cable to squeeze pads onto the wheel rims, slowing them down. Calliper brakes are sometimes referred to as rim brakes and come in three varieties: road calliper brakes, cantilever brakes, and V-brakes.
Road calliper brakes are lightweight and powerful, connected using a single bolt, with high-end options featuring a robust dual-pivot design. Cantilever brakes are often found on cyclocross bikes, and two bolts are employed to mount them to the frame and forks. V-brakes also use two bolts for mounting and provide a simplified system to cantilevers, often found on hybrid bikes. There are also some hydraulic v-brakes and road calliper brakes when the greatest power is necessary.
